SEASONAL CAMP COUNSELOR $16.50/hr
Temporary Position
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
The mission of The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is to inspire people of all ages to appreciate the Long Island Sound, its ecosystem and the global environment through living exhibits, marine science, and environmental education. For almost 35 years, the Aquarium has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of Norwalk and the region. The Aquarium has received significant recognition as a top aquarium in the nation and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The strength of the Aquarium is its full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff, in addition to our dedicated corps of volunteers.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Seeking engaging and dynamic individuals with a passion for nature and working with children to join our summer camp team. This position works with year-round Education staff to develop and facilitate hands-on science and animal encounters, field trips, and conservation activities for in-person camps. Candidates must be available to attend virtual camp training in June and be available Monday through Friday on all of the following dates from 8:30am-4:30pm (hours may slightly vary depending on the day) June 19 – August 18.
Position Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age and
- Have a minimum of 2 years of summer camp experience or other experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting.
- Health exam conducted within the past 3 years
- Ability to lift 60 lb.
Preferred Qualification
- CPR/AED/First Aid certification with Red Cross or The American Heart Association.
- Valid administration of medication certification.
- Bilingual language skills
Position Responsibilities
- Work with year-round education staff to facilitate hands-on activities, tours, animal encounters, games, and other camp-related activities for in-person camps.
- Helping to prepare daily camp materials including craft materials and experiment equipment
- Assist with cleaning and sanitization of camp materials.
- Help oversee the health and safety of campers by performing basic first aid and behavioral monitoring
- Participating in all field trip experiences including, but not limited to going aboard the Aquarium’s research vessel, to the local beach, and other outdoor locations.
- Other duties as assigned
