Accountant (Financial Reporting)

The primary responsibilities of this high-visibility role will be to perform the accounting for the company’s labor and benefits, assist with the preparation and analysis of the monthly income statement and cash flows, and perform analysis of the balance sheet. You will play a pivotal role in the monthly closing process, ensuring accuracy and reliability. You will build relationships with others across the system with similar responsibilities, fostering a collaborative team atmosphere. Major Responsibilities Prepare monthly journals to account for the company’s medical and insurance premiums, retirement benefits such as pension and OPRB, and employee benefit related reserves Conduct variance analysis to explain differences between actual financial results and budgeted/forecasted figures. Compile and analyze financial information Work collaboratively with team to ensure financial reports are prepared accurately and distributed timely Ensure all financial reporting is in compliance with regulatory requirements, including SEC, FERC and ensure compliance with GAAP Manage and reconcile general ledger accounts and ensure data integrity. Work closely with other departments such as Tax, Fuel, Revenue and other sister companies to gather and provide financial information. Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy in financial reporting. Participate in or lead special projects as needed Stay updated on new accounting standards and perform technical accounting research when applicable to ensure compliance in reporting Candidates that meet the below qualifications are encouraged to apply before the application deadline. Experience and Education Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required Experience with Oracle software platforms a plus 2+ years of experience preferred in public accounting, industry or a combination of both Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge and ability to apply GAAP and SEC rules and reporting requirements Knowledge of FERC System of Accounts and monthly closing process a plus Knowledge of Oracle ERP and SOAR a plus Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously to meet tight deadlines Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels. Must handle confidential and sensitive information Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products (Outlook, Word, and Excel) Behavioral Attributes Positive attitude, respects others and their opinions Good interpersonal skills with ability to work under pressure and with a team Exhibits a high degree of initiative and takes personal responsibility for assignments Conscientious about work product and meeting deadlines Mindset of continuous improvement Comfortable making decisions based on knowledge and/or research obtained The successful candidate will work a hybrid schedule (in office three days a week) and be located at the Alabama Power Corporate Headquarters office. Some extended hours/weekend work may be required during reporting periods.
