Wildlife Biologist

Summary The incumbent serves as a technical advisor in wildlife biology for the park. The wildlife biologist is responsible for program development and implementation for wildlife resources and their habitat requirements, sensitive species, and non-native and pest animals. Responsibilities MAJOR DUTIES: Works within the framework of a collaborative management agreement between the National Park Service and the Yurok Tribe for the management of the Northern California Condor Recovery Program (aka NCCRP) in designing, analyzing, and implementing field operational aspects of the NCCRP and biological programs at Redwood National Park involving natural resources, and that includes monitoring, treatment, tracking, and day-to-day care and management of both wild and captive California condors utilizing professional wildlife management standards of practice to meet agency mission, and program goals and objectives. Conducts program administration within the agency's mission to develop, prepare, and implement management plans, agreement documents, correspondences, grants, funding proposals, budgets, budget tracking mechanisms, purchasing, data gathering, data entry, geospatial analysis, data management, and reporting that supports the program and permitting requirements, and providing biological/technical advice and guidance to management in the development of Northern California Condor Recovery Program activities within the framework of plans that support recovery of condors as a highly endangered species to inform decision making. Develops and fosters relationships and activities with other involved public, non-profit, agencies, land managers, researchers, and other stakeholders, including State and County officials, Native American Tribes and special interest groups and/or private land owners and organizations to identify and resolve condor management issues, especially with emerging and novel or unique management situations, and including the ability to develop information contributing to education, outreach, interpretation, and communications on condor management issues. Coordinates the park's native wildlife management strategies and programs with those on adjacent lands for the purpose of achieving broad ecosystem protection strategies. Represent the park on NPS regional task groups or similar organizations. Develops partnerships with other federal and state agencies, universities, tribes, and non-profit organizations to assist with meeting goals and objectives of the program. This position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/21/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. One of the following must be met: EDUCATION: A degree in biological science that included: At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet zoology requirements where appropriate); AND at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. You must submit all transcripts. OR COMBINATION: A combination of education and experience that is Equivalent to a major in biological sciences (at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must submit all transcripts. SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs travel to and from field sites to track and care for wildlife and requires a valid driver's license. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Provided input in the wildlife management program by gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to determine environmental conditions, characteristics, and values, and the interrelationship of wildlife resources with other resources; Analyzed data and recommended solutions to problems involving a limited section of wildlife resources issues, e.g., interpreting the effect and impact of changes on wildlife habitat as a result of specific resource activities; Provided input in the preparation, maintenance, and revision of wildlife plans that involved interpretation of data obtained from studies and field surveys; make determinations on how to mitigate wildlife related issues that impact human safety or property; developed and carried out statistically valid data collection protocols for the monitoring of animal species. You must include hours per week worked on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, wildlife ecology, ornithology, biological science, and other related fields. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
