Position Summary
The librarian and coordinator of educational technology is responsible for all aspects of the library programs, resources, and facilities. This individual seeks to ensure that the library’s academic and technology resources complement, enhance, and extend the school’s educational program. They will collaborate closely with the upper and middle school principals, the technology team, and faculty in the implementation and practice of information literacy, research, reading, writing, and academic technology skills. They will be responsible for supervision of the space. As we move to a new campus in 2026, this person will be integral to defining a vision for the “Learning Commons” in collaboration with administration and faculty.
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Instruct students and faculty on how to access, evaluate, use, share, and create information
- Foster an environment of creativity, collaboration, and innovation and a love of reading and learning for middle and upper school students
- Collaborate with teachers to design, support, and implement lessons and units of instruction and to ensure that the collection, databases, and other resources support the curriculum
- Teach information literacy skills, as well as the ethical use of information to students in grades 6-12
- Collaborate regularly with the technology department to ensure consistency in skills, approach to technology, technology policies, and choice of library software, hardware, and applications
- Manage collection including selection, curation, and updating of books and digital resources
- Manage library websites, databases, and applications for both divisions. Set up and maintain student/faculty accounts. Teach digital (as well as print) research resources, databases, and web-based and online citation support (EBSCO Discovery Service, Academic Search Ultimate, JSTOR, OverDrive (Sora), and many other research databases).
- Research and evaluate new and emerging information technologies
- Collaborate with the Lower School library staff to ensure consistency in skills, electronic resources, library services, and collection development
- Prepare, maintain, and review the library budget with Chief Financial and Operations Officer
- Oversee the Upper School’s LiFTS testing system
- Attend faculty meetings, in-service activities, and other in-house trainings and professional service work as assigned by Upper School and Middle School principals
- Maintain and grow professional skills by pursuing relevant professional development opportunities
- Perform any other related duties as assigned by the middle or upper school principals
Skills and Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree and a certificate in Library Media, or Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or a related field preferred
- 2+ years of experience in library management or related academic field preferred
- Strong organization, verbal, and writing communication skills
- Ability to work productively in an open space with regular interruptions
- Enthusiasm for working with and teaching middle and upper school students, especially in developing and encouraging their research, reading, and writing skills
- Willingness to engage frequently with students grades 6-12 with patience, kindness, and humor
- Strong technology and computer skills [preferred: experience with The Apple ecosystem (iPads, MacBooks) and Google Apps for Education]. Facility with student information and learning management systems. Rowland Hall uses Veracross, Canvas, and Octopus
- Familiarity with contemporary research databases: Gale, EBSCO, etc.
- Interest and experience in curriculum development in collaboration with colleagues
- Demonstrates cultural competence and commitment to the school’s mission and values surrounding diversity and inclusion
Additional Information
This is a full-time, exempt position, reporting to the Upper School Principal. The start date is August 1, 2024.
