Job Description:

TITLE: Research Support Specialist

UNIT: Environmental Biology

SALARY: $34,000 Annual Salary at 80%

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Research Support Specialist will be involved in conservation research on an endangered terrestrial snail. The position involves careful attention to and periodic adjustment of diet, environmental conditions, and habitat requirements, as well as transfer of delicate 1 mm-long juvenile snails, tissue sampling and microscopy. Work during off-hours may be required, given the demands and dynamism of the colony. Will be expected to meet periodic benchmarks with respect to the success of the colony and periodic reintroduction of individuals into the wild. May also be involved in mark-recapture effort and leaf collection in a wild/remote area. Will train students and other colony support workers, collect, and analyze data, organize data and images, collect samples, and preserve and organize tissues. Work will include collaboration with partners such as the Rosamond Gifford Zoo and New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor degree in conservation biology or related field
Ability to lift 30 lbs. and participate in field work in wild or remote areas
Valid NYS driver's license and ability to provide your own transportation to and from work sites

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated ability for the following: to initiate projects and tasks and to work independently. Experience in outreach and leading a field team. Strong organizational and time management skills, and experience with mark-recapture techniques, invertebrate food collection and deployment, data collection and analysis. Adaptability to the changing requirements of a dynamic captive colony and sensitivity to the needs of endangered animals (particularly terrestrial invertebrates); attention to detail. Knowledge of snail diets and ecology as well as strong skill in understanding snail habitat and gastropod identification in the field and using microscopy. Ability to work collaboratively, as well as with students and the public. Microscopy and tissue dissection skills.
