Reporting to the North Regional President, the President, Chief Hospital Executive, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is responsible for developing and leading the implementation of the Hackensack University Medical Center's strategic directives focused on achieving desired clinical, financial, quality of care, service, and workforce objectives consistent with a nationally recognized academic flagship medical center. The President/CHE is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of the strategic and daily operating activities for the HUMC site in accordance with the Executive Staff Table of Organization. The scope of this medical center and Chief Hospital Executive position also encompasses the renowned, nationally recognized John Theurer Cancer Center and Joseph Sanzari Children's Hospital. The incumbent develops, deploys, and oversees internal capabilities/programming for the full scope of services through innovative leadership, while facilitating the transformation of the patient care delivery system by promoting clinical integration. He/she fosters a culture of excellence with physicians, team members and the community at large. The incumbent facilitates strong partnerships with community health agencies, stakeholders, post-acute facilities and other external entities. Interprets, communicates, and assures the implementation of the organization's mission, vision and values. Leads feasibility assessments for new programs and services and assesses the viability of existing services. Identifies, analyzes, and recommends potential mergers and/or acquisitions. Relationship Management: Establishes effective working relationships with key constituents, including community, employed and independent physicians, team members, and board members through open collaboration and consistent communication. Develops and maintains a close working relationship with members of the Medical Executive Committee President, Medical Staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure that world-class patient care is rendered at all times. Together with the executive leadership team, becomes visible and recognized in the community and works collaboratively with political leaders, advocating for the hospital and helping to maintain the strong support it currently receives in New Jersey and New York Metro regions. Monitors changes in policies and direction of regulators and agencies to assess potential impact on organizational goals. Performance Improvement: Exhibits leadership and fosters commitment to continuous improvement of quality, safety and the human experience whereby decision-making is driven by data analytics to achieve clinical excellence and customer loyalty. Embraces the aspirations of Hackensack University Medical Center to continue to advance as a preeminent academic medical center. Works with hospital and organizational leadership and team members to foster high reliability thinking with sensitivity to operations, a preoccupation with failure, deference to expertise, resilience, and a reluctance to simplify the complexity of the system. Ensures that a High Reliability Organization(HRO)/continuous improvement culture is implemented to measure actual performance against established standards; measures actual budgetary performance against standards. Drives the improvement of patient flow and throughput for the entire organization. Clinical Service Integration: Develops and fosters effective collaboration between clinical departments, matrixed care transformation services, employed and independent physicians, and other affiliated services both within and outside the hospital to ensure a wholly integrated approach to providing services, and fulfilling the hospital's strategic initiatives. Works with medical leadership to develop and implement plans and policies related to the organization's medical staff, including ensuring that aligned physician practices are integrating with Medical Center operations to the greatest extent possible. P eople Management: Provides oversight and ensures effective recruitment of competent staff as well as development and supervision of team members to deliver optimal levels of service. Establishes and sustains an environment that fosters trust, teamwork, cooperation, innovation, open communication, respect and team member engagement. Establishes clear objectives tied to department and/or organizational strategic goals. Coaches, counsels and evaluates performance of direct reports. Implements and facilitates the direction of professional/leadership development and mentoring for HUMC. Reviews the performance of direct reports. Financial Management/KPIs: In conjunction with the North Region President, directs the development and implementation of the organization's performance improvement program, workforce assessment and annual operating budget, plans, goals, and objectives. Builds financial strength by exceeding recognized operational key performance benchmarks with the best performing hospitals and health networks in patient safety, physician and employee satisfaction, and operational/clinical quality outcomes. Works with the financial team to lead the development of operating and capital budgets, as well as ensuring budget compliance. Identifies opportunities for cost reduction and/or develops plans and programs to improve cost effectiveness. Data Management and Analytics: Directs analyses and reports on relevant data and metrics to influence a high performing organization. Develops, recommends and/or implements actions or process improvements. Plans and directs the organization's programs and policies in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. Leads the organization's team in preparing operating plans for the achievement of administrative, operational and business objectives in line with organizational objectives. Creates an environment and establishes mechanisms that facilitate innovation and best practice implementation. Works with the executive staff to create a culture that encourages quality, excellence, and superior results in patient, physician, and employee satisfaction as measured by LeapFrog, US News & World Report, CMS Star Ratings, etc. Holds regular departmental and interdepartmental meetings to liaise among the medical staff, nursing staff, and other healthcare constituents. Supports nursing operations by demonstrating a strong commitment to Magnet objectives. Facilities Management: Works directly with the HMH Facility & Construction team to ensure alignment with expansion/renovation/modernization needs of the HUMC site. Provides effective, participatory leadership to the organization's facility planning processes; including the development of measurable criteria to determine effectiveness of plans, space allocation and policies. Becomes known to physicians and team members and develops a reputation for being a clear and concise communicator as well as one who espouses a philosophy of a 'walk-around' leader who is accessible and responsive to team member needs. Other Duties as Assigned: Complete all assignments and projects in a timely fashion. Assures compliance with the organization's HR policies and practices. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Qualifications Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Master Degree - Business Administration or Hospital Administration. Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive management and leadership experience as an executive within a large academic medical center or multi-hospital health system. Expertise in managing large complex budgets, facilities and clinical operations. A successful track record developing and managing service lines. Demonstrated leadership and complex organizational management skills. Proven effectiveness in building and maintaining strong physician relations in an academic medical center and multi-hospital health system environment. Experience working collaboratively with chairs and chiefs of services in achievement of the highest quality, efficient program operations and growth. Extensive knowledge and experience in both healthcare delivery and managed care. Intimate knowledge of, and experience in state regulatory affairs. Well developed planning, marketing, organizational development, and business skills. Information systems capabilities and appreciation for the data which will be required to make meaningful management decisions. Ability to work with physicians and professionals in multiple settings and locations and to promote diversity in the workplace. Able to work effectively in multiple areas within a complex, multi-faceted organization. Good business acumen with strong leadership skills. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to multi-task. Excellent collaborator. Strong project management skills. Strong financial management skills. Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.
