Director of Athletics

Position Summary

The Director of Athletics is responsible for leading, innovating, and inspiring a school-wide culture around athletics as well as overseeing the administration, communication, and supervision of the interscholastic athletics program at Rowland Hall in grades 6-12. This is an exciting moment in the history of the school, with the opening of a new middle and high school campus in the fall of 2026 and the opportunity to grow the athletic program as we grow the upper school. In addition to managing the myriad details of a program, and being a regular presence at athletic events in all seasons, the Director of Athletics will champion sports and athletic involvement, and represent the school in its region and statewide. The Director of Athletics will also coach one sport or teach a class.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Working with middle and high school student-athletes with a focus on supporting and encouraging students to participate in athletics and honoring skill development and achievement
  • Overseeing a program that includes managing a large budget, multiple direct reports, diverse facilities, and working within a complex organization
  • Managing coaching staff, including hiring, onboarding, supporting, and evaluating their work and program
  • Communicating with parents/caregivers effectively and consistently
  • Working with outside athletic organizations such as the Utah High School Athletic Association to ensure that the Athletic Department is following policies and procedures
  • Elevating a social media presence and engagement to amplify a program’s accomplishments
  • Encouraging community support of an athletic program
  • Assessing competitive marketplace and making recommendations regarding growing programs
  • Supporting student-athletes in the college athletic recruitment process
  • Demonstrating cultural competence and commitment to the school’s mission and values surrounding diversity and inclusion

Skills and Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, whether working with parents/caregivers, colleagues, or students and a focus on creating positive relationships with a variety of individuals
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, as well as the flexibility and humor needed to run an athletic program with a variety of constituents and outside partners
  • Coaching or working in a program (club sport or other) that has thrived and has contributed to that program’s growth
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher is required, ideally in the area of sports administration or education
  • 5+ years of experience in athletics administration is highly preferred
  • Solid technology and computer skills (preferred: experience with student information systems, including Veracross and Canvas)
