Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a Health Support Technician (HST) position under the direct supervision of the Community Health Nursing Supervisor-SES. This position directly involves working with the CHD Laboratory performing phlebotomy procedures and the processing of blood and body fluids for laboratory testing under OSHA standards and Department of Health laboratory protocols and guidelines. This position will work within the clinical department as well as including but not limited to HIV, Tuberculosis, Epidemiology, Epilepsy, Insulin programs and any others deemed necessary. This position is responsible for the integrity and confidentiality of data sets under his/her control and will come to work and exhibit an attitude of friendliness and eager customer service towards all clients and act respectfully and courteously to fellow employees and clients. Uses knowledge of quality improvement (QI) methods and processes to work with other staff to help identify opportunities for improvement and develop a culture of quality within DOH Taylor; assists in improvement projects, as assigned.
Assists the practitioner in the clinic setting by performing vital signs, client’s history, diagnostic tests, administering and maintaining records of medical treatments, refers patient/client/family to community resources to assist in care; and interpreting the practitioner’s orders. Collects specimen appropriate for care and complete required forms. Takes height, weight and conducts routine laboratory tests including performing phlebotomy as required. Collects and records health information of services performed. Inputs data into Florida Shots immunization system. Perform client follow up activities to secure compliance and closure of recommended actions including triage activities. Assists with interviewing patients by identifying persons at risk; assists in the operation of routine testing of disease in persons at risk and the operation of communicable and/or chronic disease control; prepares records and reports required by state programs; schedules, plans and conducts special outreach disease control programs; prepares documents relative to the epidemiological process. Primary lead for ADAP (Aids Drug Assistance) program. Tracking client using DIS protocols. Assists practitioner in management of Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Program form completion and annual mammography event. Assists practitioner and other clinic staff in clinic with vital signs, history intake, determining complaints, entering CLIA waived lab tests in HMS, education/counseling, HIV pretest counseling and other clinic duties related to position. Patient referrals as requested by Medical Doctor or ARNP for other services needed.
Translating/explaining information and how it can be understood, used to support responses and provide feedback with others: counseling, educating and interviewing clients in a clinical setting and consulting with the RN or practitioner on staff; communicating with persons outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, public, government and other external sources; compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, auditing, verifying, or processing information or data. Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining medical information either in written or electronic form. Monitoring/reviewing information from materials, events or environment including Family Planning I&E Committee. Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Maintains control log for glucose, hemoglobin, pregnancy tests and other CLIA waived tests. Performs monthly equipment inventory and maintains log. Assists with vaccine temperature monitoring, Verilert system, ordering vaccine and vaccine inventory. Assists provider with monitoring/documenting/case management of TB clients, Epilepsy, and Insulin program management including ordering supplies and medication, inventory management and tracking in Central Pharmacy, Biohazard collection and disposal.
Draw blood specimens. Maintain laboratory facilities and control laboratory supplies. Maintain a variety of laboratory instruments and laboratory equipment. Maintain and control laboratory records. Prepare specimens from any part of the body. Perform data entry of results and required reference ranges of laboratory tests.
Participates in continuing education and in-service trainings. Keep up to date with current literature to enhance personal and professional growth and development; provides job related in-service training to CHD and other agency staff/volunteer/school groups.
Other duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of HIPPA laws and DOH security and confidentiality policies and procedures.
Skill in utilizing phlebotomy techniques; Skill in working directly with patients in a laboratory/medical setting; Skill in labeling, processing, and preparing laboratory samples for testing.
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and make appropriate decisions regarding assigned work; Ability to prioritize and complete work assignments with given timeframes; Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks; Ability to perform preventative maintenance on equipment/instruments as they related to specimen collection; Ability to utilize a decentralized hospital computer program/system to generate requests, work labels, and worklists.
Qualifications:
Minimum- Certified and Trained to perform phlebotomy, CPR and First Aid Certified,
Preferred- 1-3 years experience with case management of chronic health conditions, 1-3 years experience working in a medical health care setting, 1-3 years experience with the collection of various laboratory specimens,
