JOB SPECIFICS
The Maintenance Worker provides a variety of skilled maintenance work to support Public Works to ensure the safety and security of County residents and visitors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent
AND
Three years of full-time work experience in highway/road or parks maintenance that included the operation of various types of motorized equipment
AND
Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake designation, that is not suspended, canceled, or revoked
Must obtain and maintain a Class “A” CDL with 5th wheel Tractor-Trailer, Manual Transmission, and Tanker Vehicle endorsement, within six months of employment, at the employee’s expense.
The finalist for a position vacancy will be required to pass a drug test, physical exam, criminal background investigation, driver's license, and DOT Drug/Alcohol testing verifications, all at County expense, prior to beginning employment with Washington County.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
More than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of work experience in highway/road or park maintenance that includes the operation of various types of motorized equipment.
Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake designation that is not suspended, canceled or revoked.
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake designation, and Tank Vehicle endorsement.
More than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of work experience in the operation/maintenance of a state, regional, city, or county public park system.
More than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of work experience in highway/road or park maintenance.
Paid work experience in road construction (e.g. erosion control, blacktopping, culvert installation).
Paid work experience plowing snow on state highways, county highways/roads, city streets, or township roads.
Paid work experience plowing snow on privately owned streets, alleys, or parking lots
Paid work experience using any of the following: tandem axle with wing or plow, single axle with wing or plow, ski trail groomer, skid steer loader, tractor with mounted implements, front end loader, brush chipper, forklift, dozer, backhoe, front-mounted mower.
SELECTION TECHNIQUE: Your training and experience will be rated based on the required application material submitted and the top-scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.
HOURS / DAYS: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm / Monday – Friday 40 hours per week. May include day, evening, weekend & holiday hours. Work, schedules (hours and days) are subject to change based on department needs.
ANTICIPATED PAY RATE: $25.49 to $30.52 Hourly

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
General:
• Perform snow and ice control to county standards to include plowing snow and applying liquid anti-icing and deicing agents, salt and/or sand and removal of snow.
• Operate vehicles, heavy equipment, hand and power equipment and tractor mounted implements in a safe and efficient manner.
• Document time spent on particular projects, equipment, roads, park, or facility. Accurately documents materials used.
• Provides works direction to temporary employees. Clear and grub brush and trees from public lands. Removes debris and excess material from culverts and ditches. Conduct activities to include sodding, spraying weeds, fertilizing, planting, pruning, seeding, mowing, chipping, trimming and other similar activities.
• Repair and conduct minor maintenance of equipment and facilities to include; sharpening blades, lubricating equipment and motors, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, hydraulic, minor welding and torch use
• Perform other duties as apparent or assigned.
Highway
• Build and/or widen roads and trails, road grading, cut slopes or landscaping, patching, place bituminous and concrete pavements, shouldering, ditching, culvert replacement, street and/or trail sweeping, animal carcass removal and mowing.
• Load and/or haul materials such as salt, sand and salt mixtures, gravel, asphalt, debris, etc.
• Complete and proper set up of work zone traffic control measures, in conformance with the MMUTCD, for all operations performed within the highway corridor.

Parks
• Maintain County park buildings and facilities in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition;
• Install, repair and maintain irrigation systems;
• Maintain landscape and apply appropriate pesticides and fungicides;
• Inspect and maintain grounds and facilities (County pool, playgrounds and park trails, etc.);
• Create and renew trail system through safe prairie burn practices;
• Conduct beach maintenance (removal and placement of buoys, water treatment, raking, repair and placement of guard stands, etc.);
• Perform park facilities plumbing maintenance and repair.
Traffic
• Repair, salvage, install and replace highway signs including traffic control signs, Adopt-A-Highway signs, construction detour signs, and informational signs.
• Create and design sign faces with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software;
• Construct sign faces and decals for sign and vehicle uses;
• Fabricate traffic and other signs using pressure sensitive methods;
• Perform highway striping and messaging operations, pavement sweeping, paint preparation and loading, striping truck operation, and warning vehicle operation;
• Locate and stake sign location placement; and
• Maintain up-to-date and adequate inventory of signs and materials in shop, and installed or utilized in the field using current department sign inventory software. Record work orders completed; determine supplies needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is physical in nature including working in all weather conditions, lifting and carrying up to 65 pounds on an occasional basis. Exposures may include, but are not limited to: various chemical agents, fuels, blacktop/diesel/gasoline fumes, temperature extremes, high-speed and heavy traffic conditions, above and below ground utility hazards, confined space and in rare instances body fluids. Duties include being able to perform the following movements on a frequent to continual basis: bending, turning/twisting, kneeling, squatting, lifting, climbing, reaching out, reaching up, grasping, pinching, wrist turning and finger manipulation. Equipment includes but is not limited to: telephone, 2-way radio, small hand and power tools and equipment, cement and blacktop tools and equipment, tandem and single-axle dump truck with wing and plow, one-ton trucks, skid loader with attachments, various rollers, road graders, dozer, backhoe, front-end loader, shoulder machines, forklift, boom truck, sweepers, cement and asphalt saws, cement mixers, welders/torches, mowers flail and boom arm, chipper, cranes, vacuum excavator, tack oil trailers, trailers, boats, snowmobiles, water pump, hydraulic equipment, chain saw, weed whips, computer and other equipment related to area of assignment. This work environment also includes the need to distinguish between colors based on work assignment. Work involves various schedules including evenings, weekends, holidays and/or irregular/extended shifts.
