Job Description
The purpose of this position is to "seek to bring forth and establish the cause of Zion" by operating the boilers, and steam equipment in our facilities in an effective, efficient, and safe manner and to provide steam and hot water to Headquarters Facilities. This is an individual contributor role.
This Position Works The Following Shift
(4) 10-hour shift schedule, alternating Mon-Th and Tue-Fri
Once the shift has been selected that is your shift for the year
The pay range for this position is: $33-$36/hr, depending on experience and/or training in the plumbing or electrical fields.
Responsibilities
- Operate, repair, replace, troubleshoot, overhaul, and maintain boilers, boiler controls, boiler safety devices, boiler chemical pumps, boiler chemical lines, piping, valves, steam traps, regulators, steam generators, non-electric pumps, steam systems, condensate systems, humidity systems plus all other equipment for production and delivery of steam and hot water energy to help maintain effective, efficient and a safe environment.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on boilers, including annual overhauls, steam traps, regulators, non-electric pumps, valves, piping, steam generators, chemical pumps and feed lines.
- Understand the chemistry of boiler water and be able to test and maintain critical chemical levels to keep the boiler and piping protected from scale, corrosion, caustic embrittlement, and carryover.
- Work safely with boilers and steam equipment and understand the hazard or working with boilers and both high-and low-pressure steam, making safety a priority.
- Use power tools, work from a ladder, work in confined spaces, work in high temperature and noisy boiler rooms, can lift 50lbs., and work standing for extended periods of time.
- Work from blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and drawings to build or repair piping and equipment.
- May work with architects, engineers and vendors to research problems and identify parts.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by Management.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Journeyman license/certification in the plumbing or electrical field
- Five years journeyman level experience in a related field (plumbing, electrical, or controls)
- Complete and become certified in the Boiler 1 training from GCAP within 3 years of working as a steam mechanic while working in the position
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship in steam boiler plant operation
- Demonstrates a knowledge of boiler operation, the steam cycle, the boiler’s sequence of operations and safety, understands steam and condensate systems
- A welding background is helpful
- Must be able to read, write, and understand English for general communication, video training, and safety
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to pass all required safety and equipment certifications
- Computer experience is needed for trainings and time entry
- Must be able to work as a team
- Must be able to lift objects weighing 50 lbs.
- Must be able to fit into confined spaces such as manholes, crawl spaces, boilers, etc.
