Join our team for a 10-week summer law student worker position. A Law Student Worker assists regular employees in the more routine aspects of their jobs and carries out specific assignments under supervision. Duties may vary from researching information for cases, assisting in the preparation and presentation of reports, to routine clerical assignments in an office and/or courtroom setting. This is not a post-bar law clerk position. This is designed for students who are not in their final year of law school. AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: District Attorney's Office PAYROLL TITLE: Student Worker III SALARY: $ 17.78 /Hour You will not be placed on the eligible list until you submit proof of law school enrollment. Placement on the eligible list does not guarantee that all candidates will be contacted by the hiring manager for interviews. We will be hiring up to six (6) Law Student Worker positions within the District Attorney's Office. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: A Student Worker may only work for a three (3) year period. During that three (3) year period, a Student Worker may only work a total of 3,120 hours, working no more than 1,040 hours in each year of that three (3) year period. NOTE: Student Worker III is represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU), and incumbents in this bargaining unit are employed as extra help and are consequently not eligible for benefits. Examples Of Duties Duties include but are not limited to the following (depending on assignment): Assists in the preparation and presentation of oral and/or written reports and presentations. Assists in researching information for criminal cases. Assists agency employees in performing routine professional, administrative or technical duties. Maintains filing and pulls historical documents and records from established files. Assists regular staff of various units in performing routine professional, para-professional or technical duties. Assists in conducting special studies in a variety of occupational fields. Assists in collecting and analyzing statistical data. Proofreads written material. Operates office equipment and machines. Performs other related duties as required. Typical Qualifications These are the minimum employment qualifications for students who wish to work for the County of Ventura. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE: Student Worker III - No experience is required. Students must provide proof that they are enrolled in at least nine (9) units of academic/technical college/university courses at the undergraduate level or at least six (6) units at the graduate level. PLEASE NOTE : Some departments may require proof that the students be enrolled in a minimum of twelve (12) units of academic/technical college/university courses at the undergraduate level. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Modern office methods and procedures, including business correspondence, filing, standard office equipment, and computer proficiency and the California Penal Code, the California Evidence Code and basic criminal law procedure that is commensurate with the expected law student’s knowledge of these subjects. Skill in: Researching information, organizing documents and record maintenance. Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions, identify problems, research, and propose possible solutions, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, perform a variety of administrative assignments, establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisor, coworkers, other agencies, and agency customers from diverse backgrounds, effectively work with the public and employ customer service techniques in situations requiring tact and courtesy, work effectively with adults in performing assigned tasks. Student Worker III's may work during the summer upon providing evidence that they have graduated from high school or carried at least nine (9) units in the previous spring session, are enrolled for at least nine (9) units for the next fall session, OR are enrolled in at least three (3) units of summer courses. NOTE : Audits of class enrollment will be routinely completed to ensure minimum requirements are being met. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to pass a thorough background check.
