Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for an accomplished leader to lead the Global Data Center Health and Safety (Global DC H&S) teams that will shape how AWS does business as it continues its rapid global growth. AWS is at the forefront of the cloud computing and service industry, providing IT infrastructure services such as on-demand compute capacity, storage, content delivery, database services, browsers, the next gen AI/ML services and more, and delivering innovative products and services to customers across the globe. The position will be based in Seattle or Virginia and support the Global AWS Data Center community.
The AWS Global DC H&S Team is a growing team that has been tasked with keeping our Data Center employees safe and ensuring compliance with our regulatory obligations in relation to the safety of all facets of AWS' global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other customer-facing enterprises and products. The AWS Global DC H&S Team sits within the AWS Data Center Community and is responsible for defining AWS’ global safety program. This includes managing the implementation and evolution of risk management systems, setting and refining global policies, driving continuous improvement in our safety programs, providing specialist expertise, overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing, baseline metrics, employee training, ensuring effective engagement by safety on global initiatives, and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective health and safety compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while prioritizing employee safety.
As the Director of the Global DC H&S team, you will be responsible for leading and motivating an experienced and talented group of health and safety experts, including setting the team's mission and strategy, building out the team, and developing team members. You will be responsible for developing continuous improvement initiatives to target and reduce risks in the workplace by leveraging workplace data, analysis, and trends. You will partner with a variety of business leaders across every business unit of AWS to share strategies, influence change and drive a safety-first culture.
Key job responsibilities
As the Global Director of the DC Health and Safety Team, you will be responsible for hiring, leading, developing and motivating an experienced group of health and safety professionals, including:
Continuing team development to ensure AWS is not only raising the bar on health and safety compliance, but is proactive and looking around corners to anticipate newly emerging safety challenges and trends.
Driving a goals and data-driven approach to ensuring that key objectives and /or outcomes are being achieved on the desired timelines and that our investment levels are driving the desired results.
Driving an innovation mindset to ensure continuous improvement of AWS' health and safety programs while inventing and simplifying compliance processes to increase efficiency.
Driving automation, and creation of mechanisms to enable the teams to focus on their highest value contributions to AWS.
Shaping AWS' long-term strategy on high impact and often novel issues on a global basis, and supporting partner teams across AWS achieve their goals including on high profile and important initiatives.
Ensuring that business partners deeply understand the implications of health and safety compliance, and view the Global DC H&S team as valued partners in achieving their business goals.
Developing strong Amazonian leaders and highly motivated team members.

A day in the life
This is an operations role in the physical DC space – you will manage the operating details of your organization, ensuring consistent results, solving emergent business problems, ensuring events and issues are driven to swift resolution, and keeping your team ahead of customer impacting risks and issues. You’ll work with your peers and leadership chain to define our strategic objectives and build the plans to implement them. Your most important job is to develop the employees in your organization, preparing them for the future while continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Basic Qualifications
Minimum college/university degree in occupational health and safety or equivalent field
Minimum 10 years of experience designing and/or implementing health and safety compliance policies, processes and procedures along with managing company-wide health and safety programs, with a proven record of safety
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in occupational health and safety or equivalent field
Demonstrated ability to build and implement compliance programs and embed a culture of safety first in a large, global enterprise
Experience building and implementing ANSI Z10 and ISO45001 safety management systems
Extensive knowledge of safety and health laws and regulation and practices of investigations and workplace safety
Field experience working in a data center or similar operations environment
Experience in a fast paced, changing/growing organization
Strong management experience, with a record of proven leadership
Success working in matrixed organizations
High ethical standards with proven ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information
Excellent judgment, discretion and diplomacy
Excellent problem-solving skills, an ability to innovate, and attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience interfacing with and influencing site leaders and senior business leaders
Ability to identify, develop and implement department goals and strategies

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $190,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $283,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
