Overview:

Under direct supervision of the Parks Director, the Park Maintenance Crew Lead plans, directs, and manages the maintenance operations, irrigation, playgrounds, landscaping, buildings, structures, sport fields or courts and special events associated with the City of Bountiful parks, open spaces, trails, sports facilities, and streetscapes as assigned.


Tasks:

  • Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, policies, and expectations.
  • Oversees and performs general grounds and landscape maintenance; maintains parks, playgrounds, bowery’s, restrooms, small buildings, trailhead facilities, detention basins, open spaces, and streetscape.
  • Maintains and/or installs trees, shrubs, flowers, turf, playgrounds, protective playground surfacing, court nets, benches, bleachers, picnic tables, fencing, etc.
  • Operates, directs and trains laborers in personal safety equipment and usage of mechanical landscape equipment including string trimmers, edgers, blowers, push mowers, zero turn mowers, large gang mowers, small tractors, and other related landscape equipment; performs routine/regular maintenance on equipment.
  • Fertilizes, aerates, mows and trims grass, collects and removes trash; removes dead, diseased, or injured trees; stimulates healthy plant growth through custom pruning and cutting, fertilizing, and watering. Assists in the installation, maintenance, and operation of sprinkler systems.
  • Directs operations such as spraying for the prevention or eradication of pests, fungus, and insects harmful to park turf, plants, trees, shrubs, and other environments; selects appropriate chemicals and combinations to accomplish task; maintains records of spraying activities; assures chemicals are properly stored and used in conformity with city, state, or federal regulations; operates spraying equipment.
  • Works collaboratively with Parks Flower and Plant Crew Lead in the maintenance of flower/shrub beds and greenhouse facility.
  • Prepares and maintains various field records; monitors seasonal worker timecards; assists in monitoring seasonal employee leave; conducts safety inspections and makes recommendations for changes or improvements in equipment, facilities, employees, etc.
  • Must be available for weekend rotating reservation, special event coverage, winter snow removal, and emergency callouts.
  • Under the direction of the Parks Director, additional job responsibilities, assignments, or duties may be added or changed at any time.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:

Knowledge of safe methods for using, storing, mixing, and applying insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, surfactants, and other chemicals.

Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, including employee training, performance evaluation, employee hiring, motivation, and discipline.

Ability to prepare and present clear and concise maintenance reports.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally.

Ability to perform other related duties and tasks as directed or required.


Qualifications:

Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent; plus two (2) years of specialized training or education provided through professionally sponsored workshops, technical school, vocational studies, college or apprentice program; AND Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance, upkeep and beautification of turf, parks, irrigation systems, plant material, equipment, facilities and/or related environments, and employee supervision. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License. Must possess a valid Utah Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators License(s) or able to obtain one within 6 months. Minimum certificates required; Ornamental & Turf and Vertebrate. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen, background and driving record check.
