Job Posting for Flower Farm Hand (Part Time & Seasonal) at Bloomed Life & Utah Flower Farm
Title: Flower Farm Hand
Hours: Part-Time, Flexible Schedule, 1-2 days/week
Wage: $14/hr
Start Date: May 1 (flexible start date)
We are hiring a Flower Farm Hand to assist with our seasonal rose growing. The start date is May 1st (flexible), and hourly pay is $14/hr. Hours are very flexible.
Bloomed Life is the sister business to Utah Flower Farm. Both businesses are female-owned and operated startups. Utah Flower Farm is Utah’s largest rose farm; growing over 12,000 plants and 150 varieties. Our mission is to provide high-quality, fragrant, locally grown roses from our farm to our store front, Bloomed Life, where we sell to customers and florists. Bloomed Life also doubles as an event space for local florists and artists, as well as for companies and individuals as a private event space.
This position is ideal for someone interested in learning about farming, horticulture, agriculture, gardening, cut flower production, or looking to expand one's experience in floristry. The majority of the hours will be fieldwork outside; mainly deadheading and occasionally helping with watering and weeding. This position is great for anyone looking to be in the sun and for anyone who enjoys listening to music/podcasts/audiobooks while they work.
Our 13-acre property (with 3 acres devoted to roses) is exceptionally beautiful in the summer and is also home to peacocks, teddy bear lambs, and a miniature pony. With that being said, flower farming is NOT romantic or glamorous work. One should expect hard, repetitive physical work, spent bent over for hours at a time, lifting 50 lbs, pushing wheelbarrows, and cleaning and maintaining equipment.
The season begins in May and ends in October. We are flexible with hours, though ideally, the shifts would be from 6:30 - 3pm, 1-2 days a week. Week and weekend shifts are available. Hours are subject to change based on farm needs, though we will do everything we can to work with you. The location for our farm is in Holladay, while our retail store is located on 2150 S Main St. Ground level unit.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Deadheading roses (main responsibility)
- Maintaining irrigation systems
- Watering roses by hand
- Hand harvesting flowers
- Post-harvest handling of flowers
- Weeding, pruning, and staking
- Lifting buckets of mulch and bales of hay to spread them in the fields (or remove them from fields)
- Operating small-scale farm equipment
- Practicing excellent bucket maintenance of cut flowers, excellent upkeep of your cubby and workspace, and farm equipment
- Keeping the barn clean and organized
- Driving a van and/or golf cart
The ideal candidate:
- Is reliable - above all else
- Loves to work outside
- Enjoys working independently
- Has a strong passion for plants and people
- Has an infectious positive attitude
- Enjoys hard, physically demanding work in 100-degree days for most of the summer. We are on our feet all day and in all types of weather conditions. We work in rain and shine.
- Is inquisitive, trustworthy, reliable, self-motivated, and hardworking
- Can communicate well and operate with a high degree of flexibility
- Has the ability to work efficiently at time-sensitive tasks like deadheading or harvesting blooms
- Enjoys working as part of a team and can practice patience within a work environment
- Arrives on time and takes initiative
- Pays acute attention to detail and enjoys problem-solving
- Able to take direction, ask for help, and welcomes constructive feedback
