Pre-Kindergarten Teacher Assistant

Position Purpose

An employee in this class provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. The work is directed by specific instructions, precedents and established policy. Problems are solved through the exercise of judgement in selecting the best course of action to be taken. Errors are expected to be recognized promptly by the supervisor and corrected with little negative consequence. The work is performed under the limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal.

Reports To: Classroom Teacher, Principal/Assistant Principal

Essential Job Functions

• Gives group instruction as prescribed by teacher
• Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
• Assists professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
• Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
• Praises and reinforces achievement of students. Creates and distributes awards for positive behavior.
• Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
• Arranges classroom furnishings and equipment. Reorganizes materials at the end of the day.
• Files data according to regulatory requirements
• Constructs, copies and distribute and use educational materials as needed.
• Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.

• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form without constant supervision.
• Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
• Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
• Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, basic characteristics of ages and stages.
• Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans.
• Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor.
• Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

• Works in standard office and school building environments.
• Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.

Qualifications Profile

All Teacher Assistants shall:

1. have a high school diploma or its equivalent and shall either:
   • hold a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; or
   • hold or be working toward an Associate Degree or higher in birth-through-kindergarten, child development, early childhood education, or an early childhood education related field. Teacher Assistants working toward the Associate's Degree shall make progress by completing a minimum of six (6) semester hours per year.
2. Bachelor's degree is preferred
