The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s Office of Philanthropy seeks an experienced, innovative, and strategic Principal Gifts Officer to support the university’s robust principal gifts fundraising efforts. Principal Gifts to universities are transformative and create new projects and programs. The Principal Gifts team, led by the Assistant VP for Principal Gifts, is responsible for managing all the President’s and Provost’s prospects. The Principal Gifts Officer will be responsible for creating a viable portfolio of prospects by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting new principal gift prospects with giving capacities of one million dollars or more. The Principal Gifts team will be responsible for directing the planning process for the University’s next comprehensive campaign. This will involve a deliberative process involving the President, Provost, Deans, and key leaders from the University of Maryland Medical System. This process will yield strategic initiatives, which the Principal Gifts team will develop and describe in detail, with goals and timelines for the campaign. The Principal Gifts team will also execute a series of engagement strategies to gather input from alumni and donors and invite their partnership in the process. The Principal Gifts team will direct the formation of an advisory council to the President, which will evolve into the Campaign Cabinet. They will work directly with the President, Provost, and Chief Philanthropy Officer to develop all relevant meeting agendas, identify, and implement program details such as speakers for diverse topics, meeting protocols, and all operations for the advisory council to become a viable volunteer committee for the President. In addition, the Principal Gifts Officer will maintain a portfolio of no more than 50 principal gift prospects. These prospects meet one or more of three criteria: approaches that involve the President or Provost; approaches of $1,000,000 or more; and approaches that involve two or more schools or divisions. The Principal Gifts Officer should demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative environment, respecting diversity in all its forms. They should also have an extensive knowledge of fundraising principles and related experience working with high level administration, volunteers, and other high-level participants who from time to time will be engaged with the President and University leaders. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland. * *Primary Duties: * Manage a portfolio of no more than 50 prospects, each with one or more of three criteria: approaches that involve the President or Provost; approaches of $1,000,000 or more; and approaches that involve two or more schools or divisions. * Work with University leadership, deans, faculty, and philanthropy colleagues across the University to cultivate, solicit and steward proposals that address strategic initiatives of the University and other programs that cross divisional lines. * Facilitate the planning and execution of a series of meetings with the President, Provost, Deans, and other key leaders to develop strategic initiatives that could serve as centerpieces for the University’s next comprehensive campaign. * Develop the activities and resources necessary to achieve measurable impact on selected initiatives. * Identify prospects for these initiatives in collaboration with the Development Research team and other philanthropy colleagues. These will include alumni, grateful patients, friends, corporations, and foundations on a national basis. * Plan and execute engagement events that educate and cultivate prospective donors about the strategic direction of the University and the impact of the campaign’s success. * Maintain, update, and renew all these activities across the entire timeline of the campaign. * Cultivate and recruit an advisory council for the President. This group will advise on the University’s strategic initiatives and seed a Campaign Cabinet. * Work with the Principal Gifts team and Chief Philanthropy Officer to recruit and manage the Campaign Cabinet, a group of dedicated volunteer leaders and principal-gift donors who will provide guidance and leadership for the campaign. * Work with the President to develop agenda items for discussion with committee, identify and secure presenters for discussion topics, and research recommended topic areas to the President. * Communicate directly with council members throughout the year for follow-up for meeting outcomes. Coordinate with philanthropy colleagues across campus to plan for meetings and ensure the engagement of council members. Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: Six (6) years of philanthropy experience with at least three (3) years of experience in the cultivation of prospect giving and management of fundraising portfolios of over $500,000. Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of work coordination or training of others preferred. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: * Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to support a mission and strategic vision.
