About Us

The state operated veterans’ homes are independent state agencies that organizationally report to the Secretary of the Executive Office of Veterans’ Services (EOVS). The Veterans’ Homes are owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and address the needs of a wide variety of veterans, including long term care and domiciliary services meeting the veteran residents’ care and psychosocial needs. The care and services provided by the Veterans’ Homes are supported by a staff of approximately 450; representing physicians, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, aides, social workers, recreation therapist, physical and occupational therapy, speech language pathology, educators, building trades, dietary, housekeeping, managers, support staff, consultants and contractors. The tradition of service to the veterans of Massachusetts is surpassed only by a continued commitment to excellence in care for those who are in need now and in the future.


Position Overview

The Superintendent is appointed by the Secretary, EOVS and serves at his/her pleasure. The Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of their respective state-operated veterans’ home and ensures that facilities, personnel, operations and finances are well-managed, and a high quality of care is maintained. The responsibilities of a Superintendent shall include, but not be limited to: (i) developing organizational policies and procedures for the home; (ii) conducting recruitment, hiring and training of personnel; (iii) directing, supervising and evaluating the work of personnel; (iv) remaining up-to-date on medical advances and equipment; (v) ensuring compliance with government regulations and policies; (vi) ensuring regular communication with state agencies and bodies; (vii) managing fiscal planning and operations; (viii) monitoring the use of services and facilities to ensure effective use of resources and to assess future needs; (ix) directing communications with residents and their families; and (x) other duties as assigned subject to ADA accommodations.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision and direction for the Home
  • Direct and oversee an efficient system for the provision of quality long-term care, as well as outpatient care, domiciliary, and supportive care service for eligible Veterans for both the current and future veterans of the Home
  • Supervise the Deputy Superintendent and the senior leadership team; provide guidance to staff and senior leaders
  • Direct and supervise the activities of medical, nursing, quality and infection control, staffing, technical, administrative, service, recreation, labor, facilities and environmental services, healthcare informatics and technology, and other operations
  • Oversee the fiscal operations of approximately $50 million for program services, facility operations and personnel, and major capital improvement projects
  • Participate in daily or weekly management team meetings
  • Represent the Veterans’ Home in meetings with the Secretary of EOVS, legislators, and leaders of the Massachusetts veterans' network

Qualifications

  • At least seven (7) years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in business administration, business management, public administration, public management, clinical administration or clinical management
  • At least four (4) years of experience in a managerial capacity
  • Knowledge of veterans’ facility services policies, regulations and programs
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of HR management
  • Knowledge of the principles & practices of budget development, financial management and expenditure control
  • Knowledge of facilities planning and management

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in change management and leading a healthcare facility or nursing facility through significant reforms or transitions. Current Massachusetts nursing home administrator's license. Experience with management of veterans in a nursing home or long-term care facility.
