Job Description

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk seeks a full-time Exhibit Maintenance Technician I. This position is responsible for the on-going maintenance and reliable operation of all exhibits working with the Director of Exhibits and Exhibit Maintenance Technician.


Organization Background

The mission of the Maritime Aquarium is to inspire people of all ages to appreciate the Long Island Sound, its ecosystem and the global environment through living exhibits, marine science and environmental education. For nearly 35 years, the Aquarium has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of Norwalk and the region. The second largest family attraction in Connecticut, and 50 miles from New York City, the Aquarium hosts nearly 450,000 guests annually. Its primary exhibits take guests on a voyage from the shallow salt marshes and estuaries to the depths of the Long Island Sound and the ocean beyond, culminating with habitats for sharks and harbor seals. Altogether, the Aquarium is home to more than 7,000 animals and 310 species in 75 exhibits. A new 4D Theater offers a unique sensory film experience for guests. Its education programs introduce approximately 80,000 students, campers and scouts to marine and STEM education. The Aquarium is recognized as a top aquarium in the nation, and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is an active participant in the local and regional community. The strength of the Aquarium is its 65 full-time staff, and part-time and seasonal staff, in addition to our volunteers.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma required or two years of museum/aquarium exhibit maintenance experience or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to use tools necessary to the job.
  • Basic knowledge and skills using Adobe Illustrator CC and Adobe Photoshop CC.
  • Proven attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and push 75 pounds; climb ladders and steps; able to move and access all areas of the facility and its grounds.
  • Able to work in both a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work weekends on a regularly scheduled basis.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist Director of Exhibits and Exhibit Maintenance Technician to conduct daily walk through of interior and exterior of facility to ensure exhibits are functioning properly.
  • Assist Director of Exhibits and Exhibit Maintenance Technician to perform daily exhibit maintenance including, but not limited to, cleaning, repair, replacement and resetting of exhibit components, signage, exhibit artifacts, exhibit lighting, sound systems, audio-visuals and computer driven computer interactives.
  • Assist Director of Exhibits and Exhibit Maintenance Technician to create digital layouts for simple signs, work reference documents such as installation plan, completion report, and others.
  • Uses tools including band saw, router, table saw and other basic tools.
  • Tasks may include woodworking, wiring, painting, and graphics assembly.
  • Able to read drawings or diagrams related to the maintenance of exhibits.
  • Assist Exhibit Maintenance Technician to order and maintain an inventory of spare components and equipment as needed and in accordance with budgetary guidelines.
  • Assist Exhibit Maintenance Technician to maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Responsible for assisting in the fabrication of new exhibits once daily checklist is complete.
